Introduction to Tv and Film Industries

Media is a : Means of communication as radio and television that reach or influence people widely

Television, internet, magazines, print, billboards ,film , News, Reality tv ,drama, Radio , music , Gaming

Ø Both the tv and film industries are now considered Traditional Media.
Ø In the last 30 years theses industries have changed due to technological progress, shifting  job roles.
Ø One must understand the contractual, legal and ethical obligations in the television and film industries, as these also change as the industries.

Traditional Media
Film and Cinema

v In 1895 auguste and louise lumiere patented the cinematography and did a public screening in Paris of ten shorts.
v Although they were not the first to create moving image they are considered the first  to create the idea of cinema being for general public ,and they were also the first to understand the medium.

·       Documentary : Mockumentary, docudrama, docufiction

Indian Cinema

o   Most popular for Bollywood referred to as Hindi Cinema.The name is a good mixture of Bombay and Hollywood.Bollywood comprises 1/3 of Indian cinema.
o   1913 : fisrt silent film made called Raja Harish Chandra,
o   1940’s to 1960’s – considered the Golden Age of Indian Cinema.
o   Tickets sales and number of films produced are the largest in the world.2006 : 1,091 Feature length  films.
o   Masala is a genre, typically 3-4 hours long, It is made up of action,romance, comedy, and now an increasing number of special effects.
o   Indian New Wave is a style which is more artistic and a substitute to commercial cinema .It has declined in popularity in the 1990’s and re-emerged in the 21 st century  in Mumbai ,under the genre of Mumbai Noir.


 Nigerian Cinema:


o   Nigerian cinema known as Nollywood has surpassed Hollywood in 2009 ,becoming the second largest industry in the world.
o   2006 : 872 films produced.
o   This is not in terms of money generated but rather  on how many films  are produced and sold.
o   Nigerian cinema is mostly shot using video cameras and not film cameras, thus making production very cheap.
o   Movies are shot using low budgets, and are generally filmed in 10 days!
o   English is used in more than 40 % of the movies which may be a reason for their success abroad  with African communities.
o   The movies have a very low production value, but are popular because most Nigerian people can identify with them.

Hollywood

  • USA created 485 Major films in 2006 ,most of which are of a higher production value .
  •   Since the 1920’s the industry has generated more money than any other countries industry .
  •    Film was a medium that grew at exponential proportions in Hollywood, USA,The major studios in the Golden Age og Hollywood were :
  •       Metro Goldwyn
  •      Warner Bros
  •     RKO
  • Paramount
